When I was a kid, I dreamed of becoming a graphic designer someday.
Okay, that's a lie. My first dream job was actually an opera singer, followed by the idea of being a botanist, and then I briefly thought about becoming a fourth-generation firefighter. Once I realized that not every firehouse has a pole to slide down and how heavy the equipment is, I began to consider more realistic career avenues.
Shortly after my firefighter dreams burned out, I discovered graphic design in my middle school keyboarding class thanks to Microsoft Publisher (when it was still a separate program). I had always loved being creative, so graphic design felt like a very natural career path for me, and I eventually earned a fine arts degree from Columbia College Chicago to support that dream.
As a social media professional, I rely on my training and skills as a designer quite frequently for photoshop purposes and minor graphics. Outside of social media, I do a lot of design work that supports events like invitations and wedding stationery, as well as digital illustration and some hand lettering.
